Ms. Brown has served as a trial lawyer for nearly 20 years and formed the Brown Law Group in 2003. She has already received the "Lawyer of the Year" award by the California Association of Black Lawyers and the "Women Who Mean Business" Award in Law from the San Diego Business Journal.

Ms. Brown received her award at the Girl Scouts annual meeting and recognition event April 26 at the University of San Diego’s Joan Kroc Center for Peace and Justice.

Official Girl Scouts’ Statement:

Girl Scouts’ Everyone who works with girls knows that being ‘cool’ is important to them. But what makes someone ‘cool’? A cool woman inspires. She raises the bar of excellence in our community through extraordinary service and achievement, both professional and personal.

A cool woman balances work, family, friends, and service. She is an outstanding role model and helps shape the lives of young girls, inspiring them to serve their communities.

Many of our 2007 Cool Women were Girl Scouts themselves, supported by leaders and volunteers like so many of you in the audience. Each of these women embodies an aspect of the Girl Scout Law, exemplifying its ideals through her words, deeds, and service to others.

As a founder of the Brown Law Group, Janice Brown brings a legal interpretation to the eighth Girl Scout tenet: to use resources wisely. Her firm of seven female attorneys – five of whom were Girl Scouts – practices "preventative law," helping companies avoid litigation through training and troubleshooting.

Janice is also known for using her own resources wisely. Not charging for faxes, photocopies, or phone calls is one way she cultivates a loyal client base and ensures good working relationships. Her staff’s resources and happiness are equally as important. Two partners, who are mothers, work part-time from home. Another attorney performs with her band at the company’s Christmas party.

This former Girl Scout recently served on Girl Scouts, San Diego-Imperial Council’s Board of Directors. Now she brings her keen legal mind to other nonprofit organizations, such as the Center City Development Corporation. Her numerous awards include Trial Lawyer of the Year, Lawyer of the Year, and Legal Professional of the Year. Girl Scouts thanks 2007 Cool Woman Janice Brown for using her resources wisely!
